The Darling Foundry, in partnership with the Indian organisations What About Art? and Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, as well as with the Canadian organisations Tata Steel Minerals and the South Asian Visual Arts Centre, renews for the seventh successive year its India Residency program, offering the opportunity to Indian artists under the age of 35 to conduct a two month creation residency in Montreal. Strengthening the links established since 2012 between Canada and India, the India Residency at the Darling Foundry allows artists, local and international communities to share their respective visions, and contribute to a dynamic cultural exchange. Immersed in Montreal’s vibrant artistic scene, the artist in residence has the opportunity to take a critical look at the local cultural context, while in return promoting artistic practices that are under-represented in North America.
ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
Hosted for two months in the former industrial complex of the Darling Foundry, the artists have a live-in studio of about 60m2, furnished with a kitchen. They have access to common spaces shared with the other artists of the Darling Foundry, including a large kitchen, a laundry room, bathrooms, a living-room, and production facilities wich are outfitted to work with wood, metal, ceramics and CNC cutting. The residency takes place during the months of October and November, during the busy cultural season of the fall. The team of the Darling Foundry sets up a networking program to facilitate interactions between the residents and the local and international art professionals, while the close vicinity of the nine Montreal-based artists who have a studio in the building contributes to a smooth inclusion into the Montreal art scene. Many events, public and professional meetings, studio visits and cultural excursions are organised according to the interest of the artists throughout their stay.
Thanks to the partnership with the South Asian Visual Arts Centre (SAVAC), a one-week research trip to Toronto is offered in addition to the residency in Montreal, further fostering professional and artistic encounters and exchanges.
SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA
The selection committee is composed by the artistic team of the Darling Foundry and external art professionals. It ensures a fair representation between artistic media and practices, genders and indigenous peoples, aiming to reflect a diversity of cultures. Selection criteria are based on the artistic quality of the work of applicants, the potential impact of the residency on their career, as well as their anticipated contribution to the arts communities in Montreal.
The residency includes :
Roundtrip airfare up to $1,500 CAD
A live-in studio for two months at the Darling Foundry, from October 1st to December 9, 2019
A production budget up to $500 CAD
A stipend of $300 CAD per week
A promotion and support program (individual guidance, networking, studio visits, a public discussion of the artist’s work)

The Darling Foundry aims to be an alternative, professional complex devoted to visual artists and their supporters. With an outstanding architectural design, The Darling Foundry, located in an old industrial neighbourhood of Montreal, offers various opportunities for research, creation, production, and exhibition. Its multifaceted spaces include room for private studios, residencies, workshops, art galleries, a restaurant and offices.
In 2012, the Darling Foundry established its first India Residency Program to benefit artists and the community in order to confront ideas from far away.
