Inlaks-Attakalari Dance Studentship Grantees 2023: Hanumantha Tavaragera and Anjali Devan

As part of the Inlaks-Attakalari Dance studentship, Hanumantha and Anjali are pursuing their Diploma in Movement Arts and Pedagogy at Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bangalore.

Hanumantha Tavaragera is a theatre artist who has completed his professional theatre training from NINASAM, Karnataka, and Anjali Devan is a graduate in BA in Economics and Mathematics from Delhi University.

In this week’s post, they share their pursuits and dreams on being selected for the studentship and the experience of learning dance at the Centre.

Hanumantha Tavaragera

Hailing from Gudaduru Village in Raichur, Karnataka, Hanumantha learnt  about Attakkalari during his days at NINASAM. He always had a passion for dance and so, decided to explore it further by enrolling for Attakkalari’s Diploma in Movement Arts and Pedagogy.

Since joining the course, he has experienced several positive changes, learning new languages and enjoying richer interactions with others. He hopes to make use of every opportunity here that is headed his way, to nurture the artist in himself.

In terms of dance, he continues to explore and is fascinated by Kalari, Bharatanatyam, Jazz, Ballet, and Contemporary, all new and exciting forms for him. He continues to learn gradually, with the body fitness classes and the learning and pedagogy sessions offering unique experiences. He says, the supportive atmosphere and encouragement from everyone at the course has made the learning process more enjoyable.

The course  has opened the doors to diverse dance forms and has become a significant influence in his life today. Knowing this is a fantastic opportunity to shape his future, Hanumantha continues to hone his art through his experiences there.

Anjali Devan

Hailing from the vibrant land of Ottapalam, Kerala, Anjali’s dance journey has been a fusion of tradition and innovation, passion and progress. The driving force behind her journey, has been her unwavering love for Bharatanatyam.

With 18 years of dedicated training, practice, and performances in Bharatanatyam, dance has been an integral part of her life. The desire to delve deeper into the art form led her to discover the Diploma in Movement Arts and Pedagogy by Attakkalari, a professional course that, according to her, seamlessly weaves together classical, contemporary, and modern dance forms while nurturing pedagogical ideas and methods.

What sets this course apart is its comprehensive nature, providing a platform for dancers like herself to evolve not just as performers but also as educators and innovators. It had been her dream to pursue this course, turn her aspirations into reality, and shape her future as a dancer and artist. And today, she says she is living her dream!

She is enjoying the diverse curriculum, as well as the exposure it gives to a variety of dance forms. With experienced in-house faculty and guest faculties enriching her learning experience, she is encouraged to step out of her comfort zone, constantly challenging herself to reach new heights. Amidst  a journey of self-discovery, she is learning and exploring the capabilities of her body, pushing boundaries, and fostering a sense of camaraderie among fellow dancers.

Through this course, she aims to not only refine her skills but also contribute to the rich tapestry of movement arts.
