Applications Open: Mumbai Art Room 2018

Applications Open: Mumbai Art Room 2018

The Foundation supports an annual series of exhibitions at the Mumbai Art Room, featuring an emerging Indian Artist or an emerging Indian Curator.

We are inviting project proposals from emerging practicing curators to be realised in the form of an exhibition. Proposals can include one or multiple artists.

While the strength of the proposed artist(s) portfolios will be taken into account, our interest is primarily in what you as the curator will do to connect your areas of interest with the artwork you are proposing.

Deadline for submissions: 15th April, 2018

Exhibition Dates: September-December 2018

In preparing your application, we ask that you take into consideration the various roles of the curator, from coming up with the exhibition’s concept, planning, execution and budgeting, as well as being able to articulate your ideas well in the proposal and subsequent curatorial note.

We are open to all forms of artistic and curatorial practice from within the contemporary art context, and are ultimately concerned with what can happen at the place where your areas of interest and the artworks intersect.

This will typically require an awareness of what you bring to the table by way of your own practices and preoccupations, as well as an understanding of the artist(s) work.

The chosen curator will benefit from MAR’s Curatorial Lab which compromises coaching and advice of the Curatorial Committee, as well as from Eve Lemesle in quality of Managing Director of Mumbai Art Room.

The Curatorial Committee includes:

  • Nancy Adajania, Cultural theorist and co-curator of the 9th Gwangju Biennial, Mumbai,
  • India;
  • Anne Barlow, Director, Tate St. Ives, St. Ives, UK;
  • Diana Campbell Betancourt, Artistic Director, Samdani Art Foundation, Dhaka, Bangladesh & Artistic Director; Bellas Artes Projects, Bataan, Philippines;

One of these mentors will be available to you for feedback and mentorship in the preparatory months leading up to the exhibition.

PUBLIC OUTREACH

Along with the exhibition, you will need to propose a public outreach programme. This could take the shape of a walkthrough (with the artist, curator or another related figure), panel discussion, workshop or collaborations with other institutions etc. The aim of this is to push young curators to think outside of the gallery walls and create a robust programme that will keep the space/show activated through the exhibition period.

THE SELECTED CURATOR WILL RECEIVE:

  • A 10 week exhibition at Mumbai Art Room
  • A curator fee of INR 10,000
  • An exhibition budget of up to INR 80,000. This amount must be split between production needs, public outreach, shipping, installation and travel.
